CONTEXT (news)

Intro to context:

big news and current events/ politics:

-David Cameron announced UKs referendum on the 23rd of June, 2016, to announce and out after voting, whether the population agreed with him, in remaining in the European Union, or whether they wished for the UK to leave. In result of this, 51.9% voted to leave and only 48% voted remain. Both people supporting the labor party, and the conservative party, along with SNP and many more political parties - the vote was unanimous.

-David Cameron then resigned from his post as prime minister on the 24th June and step down by October, as the votes were against him, him wanting to remain in the EU, then having to resign once the majority had voted remain.

-Teresa May won the contest against Andrea Leadsome on the 11th of July

-Under admitted 'intense pressure' Teresa May then stepped down as prime minister on the 7th June 2019, then the general membership of the conservative party (as they are the ones in charge) voted by postal ballot for a new prime minister and elected Boris Johnson - winning by almost double the votes against Jeremy Hunt

-The UK wanting a decent, secure deal for brexit lead to the rise in popularity in Jeremy Corbyn
- Most of the Tory's and Johnson wish for a no deal or minimal unknown deal with Brexit to try and build our country isolated and with minimal guidance as the country first voted and with this a general election would allow him the power to do so over labour do to the vaster popularity of labour currently. 

royal events:

-Will&Kate had their first born, george in 2013 , charlotte in 2015 and their most recent, louis in 2018
-26th April 2011 Prince William and Kate had their royal wedding in westminster abbey 
-2018 meghan markle and prince harry got married 

terrorism/hatred:

westminster: 22nd march 2017 terrorist attack. The 52 year old Briton Khalid Masood drove into pedestrians on the pavement using a car along the south of westminster - resulting in the injury of more than 50 people , killing 4. He then ran into New Palace Yard where he fatally stabbed an uanrmed police officer- he was shot and died at the scene. 

london bridge: The London bridge attack involved a van with the three attackers inside that drove onto London Bridge from a side of the river. The vehicle crossed over, before returning in the opposite direction some minutes later. When it reached the northern end of the bridge, police said it made a U-turn and mounted the pavement. It then crossed the bridge again, killing 3 people.

finsbury park mosque: A van was driven into pedestrians in Finsbury Park, London, by Darren Osborne, causing one death and injuring nine people.

manchester: An explosion at an ariana grande pop concert at manchester arena where 22 people died including children. More than 800 other people received physical or psychological injuries. Terrorist Salman Abedi was named as the suicide bomber who carried out the attack. 

jo cox: On 16 June 2016, Cox died after being shot and stabbed multiple times in Birstall. 

specific UK issues:

-After failed brexit attempts, may resigned after failing to secure a brexit deal and 'the stress' 
-14/6/17 the grenfell fire took place, in a 24 storey block of flats in north kensington, before 1am. Resulting in 72 deaths, more than 70 injuries and 223 escapes. An ongoing investigation.
-2018 windrush scandal is the scandal concerning people wrongly imprisoned, denied legal rights, deportation threats and wrongful deportations by the home office. 
-junior doctors strike in 2016 had a significant impact on healthcare with many appointments cancelled and fewer admissions and a&e attendances than expected. 
charlie gard case: infant boy from london with MDDS a disorder that causes brain damage and muscle failure whose parents disagreed about whether experimental treatment was in the best interest of the child. it became a controversial case. resulting in them flying abroad yet when they got there the doctor informed them it was too late for the treatment, he died a few months later.
-november 9th 2016 - trump election 


cultural trends from 2017-2019 

-celebrities said to be getting more involved with politics and social issues, using their platforms for the good of the country etc.
-The recent use of the n-word from a now former Netflix exec gives further demonstration to the CEO as quasi-public figure in this tension-filled era. Netflix was quick to jump on this.
-development in streaming films and tv series and also music streaming etc.
-recreations of original movies and movie sagas 
-rise in the popularity of youtube, much more daily content.
-social media increasingly becoming a source of income for many, with sponsors etc.
-positive media recognition with accepting disabled, with romantic comedies featuring a tetraplegic etc.
-social changes including the growing accepting of same-sex relationships in the media and increasing legalised gay marriage in different countries.

textual analysis:

camera: The tracking shot focused on the main protagonist at a level mid- close up camera angle whilst he is walking through school, highlights the props in the background and the setting being messy, and unconventional as there is paper and food surrounding the school and no students. It shows his journey leaving the school to escape what hes done
