STRANGER THINGS ESSAY

how are different social groups represented in the sequence you have analysed?

what role does the use of media language, signs and signifiers have in constructing and presenting these representations are real?                                                                                             [500 words]

Social groups are clearly represented in the first episode of stranger things through the introductions of the different characters throughout the episode. The stereotypes exerted through the main characters limit them to simple characteristics - the scientist for example who is the first character introduced in the opening scene, his haircut, typical white gown and slim figure conform to what the audience expect. However, the setting is subverted as the mise-en-scene contains key elements suggesting supernatural - the flickered lighting, the dark, sombre hallway and the scientist's panicked demeanour.

Further representations of social groups are shown through the 3 boys, Mike, Lucas and Dustin. At the beginning of the episode, the boys conform to the stereotyping of basic, intelligent, 'nerdy' kids that spend their free time gaming or learning, however, they begin to subvert their stereotyping when their friend Will goes missing in a supernatural way. It is here where the boys, especially Mike, take on the protagonist role in the episode. They take it upon themselves to investigate their missing friend. Low angle shots are used to highlight their importance and tracking shots are used to show that they are the main focal point and that they are leading the narrative.

The intertextuality used in stranger things to the classic 80s film, E.T are shown through the boys and is demonstrated in the scenes where the boys are travelling around on their choppers and using the torches, and then again in the scene where they discover Eleven, using the singular torchlight.

Subversion of stereotype is also evident in the social groups regarding the police force in stranger things. The head sheriff in the town of Hawkins is represented as unbothered, slow and unequipped. This could be however, considered a conformation of the stereotype as he is a sheriff in a small, unhappening town and typically, they may be more carefree. However, Hopper’s importance is verified with the use of the tracking shots around the forest in the search for Will and the close-ups of his face. The realism is suggested here as a balance, highlighting the binary oppositions here as the police are very normal with their uniform, office, procedure etc. as opposed to the supernatural theme in the episode.

Another social group is represented in the first episode, in the scene featuring Nancy and Steve. Steve represents the typical jock of the school, and Nancy as the attractive, clever, aspirational character that girls in the school aspire to be. They are very ‘real’ characters and again, provide the normality balance in the episode. The social group of teenagers show the simplicity of their lives compared to others in the episode.

MINECRAFT ESSAY

MineCraft is an open-world, sandbox RPG game created and designed by Marcus 'Notch' Perrson in May 2009 which was fully, further developed by Mojang who also was responsible for the publication of the product, until it was bought by Microsoft in 2014. The game knows no boundaries and is only limited by your own imagination, with infinite replay-ability which is a vital reason for the game making such success, selling over 150,000,000 copies worldwide.

The game has been made even more popular and has become a commercial success through famous Youtubers such as Ali-A (famous for playing games on his channel) who has 16M subscribers playing it and people then watching him play it and wanting it for themselves. In addition, the game itself was new to the market when it came out as it is the infinite, sand-box, multi-genre and child-friendly game that had created such a strong community of players, who all would talk about it and so word-of-mouth spread. The community that came as a result of the popularity of MineCraft also helped create the company's marketing campaign - by using the players' creations from their account, this allowed MineCraft to advertise it in this way eg. the Game Of Thrones world someone had created was used to show the detail that can be had and how creative it is which attracted more customers.

Minecraft was first played by Notch and he uploaded his gameplay to youtube for some feedback yet it didn't have a name at this point, then less than a week later, he released the free, classic version. With which, Notch started charging for downloads of the game at £8 and would update it and add features every Friday where also, the sales were rising. From September 2009 to December Mojang developed the game and added gradually, a survival mode, bigger terrains and larger maps. This gradual release of more and more exciting new features of the game kept consumers excited for the releases and they wanted to be a part of it. It is now a commercial success with over 150 million copies sold (4th quarter of 2018 statistics) and an estimated 55 million people playing the game every month. It is known to be the second best-selling game of all time. With the purchase Microsoft made from Mojang in 2014 for $2.5 billion to buy the game, Microsoft has now allowed the game to be platform agnostic and the digital distribution has allowed the game to be accessible through almost any device, as opposed to just PC where it started.

Also, due to the success, it has been able to create 'spin-off' games to further increase revenue such as 'Story-Mode', 'Education Edition', the education edition was created by Microsoft to be used for educational purposes which was very beneficial because there was no age limit, young children were playing the game already, so releasing as game for education was perfect as they would enjoy the activities on a game they love.

RADIO ONE AUDIENCE ESSAY

How is BBC Radio 1 Breakfast Show reaching, targeting and encouraging audience interaction?

The BBC Radio One Breakfast show uses numerous media forms and fun, games to target, reach and enforce an audience - of ages 15-35 to interact and become a part of their business. The breakfast show is the most well-known and loved as the audience appreciate the effort the BBC make to ensure they listen in.

Radio one is known for its innovative ways of reaching the largest possible audience including their uses of social media to encourage the younger proportion of their audience that are most likely to be on social media applications or YouTube in the mornings. They tweet and broadcast attractive headlines highlighting what the morning breakfast show will include, ensuring they include the celebrity feature and interactive 'Call in' games as these are entertaining for their audience. By creating Instagram, Twitter, YouTube etc. accounts they involve the audience in what happens within the broadcast which encourages them to listen in case their confession or input is mentioned. Radio One have a following of almost 50K and Greg James alongside with 1.5M. They use both accounts to promote the breakfast edition which will again, broaden the millennial audience that use it and see the posts. The interactive 'comment', 'like' etc. options prompt the audiences to interact with the show and talk to the crew.

They have also incorporated YouTube within their intention of reaching a wider audience as the radio one breakfast show is filmed within the studio which gives the visual, along with audio, aspect of the whole experience. Their short, edited clips show the fun atmosphere within the studio and their inside, work jokes are entertaining for the younger proportion of the audience. Along with this, they use hashtags to create trends and word of mouth making the radio more talked about amongst their followers and to gain more.

Another significant way that BBC radio one reach and target the audience with interactive methods is by their well-known little games and trends that include the audience. An example would be the comical '#PassThePasty' game where a caller claimed never to have eaten a Cornish pasty. So the aim was to travel the pasty across England by passing it to the various participators that were willing to travel some mileage in order to eventually get the infamous pasty to her. Strategically, this created much media attention to a point where there were celebrities intrigued to see if the pasty had got to her yet! Celebrity endorsement was a factor with the spread of the game as they would tweet about using the hashtag which would encourage their fans to then follow the radio to keep updated. With more and more of the country learning about this event, more people were encouraged to listen in to see the progress of the pasty until it finally reached its destination.

Finally, the presenter, Greg James plays a large part in the audience attraction as he is a young, upbeat, middle-class man with a sense of humour and a relate-able mindset in the mornings that the audience empathise with, if the audience did not like the presenter then there would be no show to interact with as this is a key aspect of the radio - especially for the target audience of 15-35 year olds. The audience calling feel that they know Greg James as they have been listening to him for a significant period of time and as he converses with the general public on a day to day basis, they feel at ease speaking with him which makes him a joy to wake up to.

In conclusion, i feel the BBC Radio one breakfast show have ensured they are trying all means to target, reach and interact with their target audience in order for them to continue to be a success. Reaching a widespread, millennial audience, by using Twitter, Snapchat etc, and incorporating entertaining, interactive games with the all ages, whilst still maintaining the informative and educational intentions of the showhas had a massively positive impact on the show, as it continues to grow.
