Lord Reith and his connection to the BBC - John Reith (1889-1971) founded the BBC. He was the general manager when it was set up as the British Broadcasting Company in 1922. He was its first director when it became a public corporation.

What does the licence fee cover? - 90%+ of the licence fee is spent on BBC TV channels, radio stations, BBC iPlayer and online services. The costs of administering the TV Licenses are less than you might think. For every £1 taken in licence fee payments, just 3p is spent on collection. A standard TV Licence now costs £150.50.
